Kilkenny's attempt to win a fifth All-Ireland hurling title in a row was stopped in its tracks by a very determined Tipperary side in Croke Park. The weekly fee for the two and a half hour session is 15 Euro-paid weekly.

On Tuesday, 14TH September there will be an ‘Open Day’ so that young people can come along and experience the work of the company before deciding to join. Those attending the Open Day should arrive on time and be prepared to stay for the full session. At the end of the Open Day, application forms will be made available to those interested in applying for a place. Entry to the ‘Open Day’ is free of charge. No need to book in advance-just turn up but be prepared to queue!
Backstage does not hold auditions and places will be filled on a first come, first served basis. The Tipperary campuses at Thurles and Clonmel can now focus afresh on developing and expanding educational opportunity for all the people of Tipperary and surrounding counties.” said Acting CEO of Tipperary Institute, Michael O’Connell. The integration with LIT provides for the maintenance and development of courses already available at Tipperary Institute but also provides for new courses specifically developed for Tipperary and the opportunity for Tipperary and indeed the Mid West students to tap into the wider array of choices available in the wider LIT organisation.
The new relationship with LIT will
1. Build the courses at Tipperary Campuses so as to service 1000 full time students from Tipperary and adjacent counties in 2014/15. Full time students stood at 337 in 2009
2. Protect the future of long term jobs and education by bringing the cost base of Tipperary campuses into line with national norms over a 5 year period.
3. Use the established LIT brand e.g. LIT (Tipp.) to build further students, parents and schools confidence in courses
4. Provide from an expanded LIT Governing Body to include membership from North and South Tipperary
5. Develop the campuses both in Thurles and Clonmel to meet demand from higher Education especially in new domains for Tipperary like Science and Education
6. Develop Enterprise Acceleration and industry support services to drive new business and economic activity in Tipperary
7. Preserve and strengthen key strong projects being delivered by TI e.g. the SERVE project and the Tipperary Energy Agency and the National Rural Network.

There are many benefits to the new organisation including
• It secures its future to provide 3rd level education in Tipperary and especially increasing interest from schools
• It makes wider range of courses and expertise available to it to meet Tipperary demands
• It preserves key strength of TI in sustainability, creativity and cross disciplinary approach
• Bringing TI into the IOT system will give credibility to proposals for expansion and development
• It provides expertise in Enterprise Development – the Community Enterprise Centre in Thurles and the development of a Enterprise Acceleration Centre in Clonmel
• Provides sound platform for future investment in campuses
• Access to expertise of TI staff especially in areas under developed in LIT
Michael O’Connell said “We are delighted with the cabinet’s endorsement and look forward now to a bright future for LIT Tipperary.”

Enquiries:
Laura O’Mahony
0504 28071

CABRAGH COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS

On Saturday 3rd of July the Cabragh Community Allotments group are holding an Open Day and having an official opening ceremony for the new Community Allotments in Thurles. Receiving a Master of Business degree by Research, Mairead Clohessy, Littleton, Thurles was among the 270 students that were bestowed with certificates, degrees and honours degrees across a number of disciplines including; Business, Rural Development, Multimedia and Communications, Software Development, IT Support, Management Studies, Accounting Technician Studies, Renewable Energy, Building Energy Rating and Adlerian Psychology and Counselling Skills.

Presenting the graduating students with their parchments, Ian McKenna of the Higher Education and Training Awards Council, who accredit the Institute’s undergraduate programmes, commented on the positive contribution that Tipperary Institute continues to make to the region, providing students from the county, as well as the surrounding region with an opportunity to receive a quality third level education close to home. He added “Tipperary Institute is to be congratulated on the important role it plays in providing access to quality higher education opportunities for many people who would otherwise be denied the opportunity”.

Director of Development and Academic Affairs at Tipperary Institute, Professor Gary Prosser said that “never has there been a more important time to celebrate the achievement of graduates of this Institute. With the economic and social challenges currently facing the country, higher education has a central role to play in our national recovery.

This is an exciting time of growth and development for Tipperary Institute. CAO acceptances for full time courses offered by the Institute have grown by 50% this year, following a 50% increase in 2008. Over the last two years the number of new students commencing their studies at the Institute has more than doubled and the Board of Directors has recently agreed a new 5 year strategic plan that aims to grow the student population to at least 1,000 full time equivalent students by 2014”, according to Professor Prosser.
During the ceremonies, Tipperary Institute acknowledged graduates from various programmes with prestigious awards for outstanding academic achievement. Among the award winners on the day were Pamela Moloney from Clonmel, who received the South Tipperary County Council sponsored Rural Development Student of the Year award and Deirdre Bourke, Foxford, Co. Mayo who received the AIB Business Student of the Year Award. The HETAC Student of the Year award was presented to Catherine McGrath, Drombane, Thurles who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Sustainable Rural Development. The prestigious HETAC award is presented annually to the graduate who achieves the highest mark across all TI programmes.
Tipperary Institute continues to go from strength to strength, catering for the educational needs of students from the Tipperary region and beyond. The new 2009/2010 academic year has got off to a flying start with a record number of first year enrolments. Students can avail of Honours Degree programmes across a range of disciplines including; Accounting and Finance, Business, Marketing, Games Design and Software Development, Creative Multimedia, Environmental and Natural Resource Management and Social and Community Studies, and further programme development is ongoing.

With a growing number of Tipperary Institute graduates now in the workplace, and with many others choosing to remain at TI to pursue postgraduate studies, Tipperary Institute’s reputation as a centre of excellence in education continues to grow.

FASHION EXTRAVAGANZA FOR THURLES

Looking for a great night out with the girls?
